BASTARDY ORDERS REF: WRO/B10/100/2

Dear Andy

No, this means that Elizabeth DOLMAN fathered a child by George DOLMAN
(keeping it in the family!).
My guess is that they were probably cousins.
The child's name is not given here, but we could probably find this out from
birth or baptism sources.
If you like, I can let you have the full text from this source.

Regards
David

  1. I believe child's name to have been James. He became the step-son of Joseph Chivers when Elizabeth married widow Joseph in 1869, BMDQ ref. 1869/4 Calne 5a/139.

Here he is in the 1871 census returns:
    1871 census; Calne, Rattles
    CHIVERS Joseph,h,m,40,ag lab,Chippenham
    Elizabeth,w,m,36,Chippenham
    Joseph,s,u,12,labourer,Calne
    DOLMAN James,s/son,10,schol,Bremhill
    Emma,s/dau,6,schol,Chippenham
    CHIVERS Alice,d,8,schol,Calne
    Frank,s,6,schol,Calne
    Mary,d,5,schol,Calne
    Franciska,d,11m,Calne

It would seem that James might have been the fourth baseborn child of Elizabeth's. Emma appears above, and there was possibly Sophia and George, as mentioned in the 1861 census when Elizabeth was with her parents:
    1861 census; Stanley Bridge, Chippenham
James Dolman, h, M, 54, ag lab, Stanley
    Ann, w, M, 56, Bremhill
    Elizabeth, d, U, 26, dairymaid, Stanley
    Jane, d, U, 21, dairymaid, Stanley
    Mary, d, U, 17, dairymaid, Stanley
Emma, d, 15, work in fields, Stanley
John, s, 12, ag lab, Stanley
    Sophia, g/d, 7, Stanley
    George, g/s, 4, Calne
    James, g/s, 3m, Bremhill

At the moment I'm not sure how this part of the family link to my part. Do you have any info taking it back further?

  4. Hi Andy,

In my haste in sending you a message an hour ago I forgot to include the census data I have gathered on what I believe to be my 2g Grandfather Joseph Chivers, and his second wife Elizabeth Dolman.

    For Joseph I have:

    1851 census; Bremhill (1/25), Studley
CHIVERS Joseph 20 Ag. Lab. Chippenham, Wilts,
Jane 25 Ag. Lab. Bremhill, Wilts = 1st wife Jane nee Slade

    1871 census; Calne, Rattles
    CHIVERS Joseph,h,m,40,ag lab,Chippenham
    Elizabeth,w,m,36,Chippenham = 2nd wife Elizabeth nee Dolman
    Joseph,s,u,12,labourer,Calne = son of 1st wife
DOLMAN James,s/son,10,schol,Bremhill could this be the child mentioned in the bastardy case?
    Emma,s/dau,6,schol,Chippenham
    CHIVERS Alice,d,8,schol,Calne

PS. Two other interests in the name Dolman: when staying with my grandparents at Beanacre (on the Melksham to Chippenham road) in the 1940s or 1950s I used to be sent to the Dolman's farm next door to get the milk, measured-out with a ladel into my jug. I believe these Dolman's had some connection with Harry Dolman who features in the history of Bristol City FC, and who lived his latter days in Chew Magna where he was a near neighbour of mine!
