Prison records
We checked up on that Quarter Sessions record for you,
and James DOLMAN is listed in all these Calendar of
Prisoners Records (ref: WSRO A1/125/46Q and 46R) under
the heading of "Devizes Bridewell - For Trial".
The offence details are the same, viz. "Committed
21 June 1797 by Sir E.Bayntun, charged on oath with
going away and leaving his wife and family chargeable
to Cherhill".The entry varies in the October 1797 and
January 1798 entries, to the extent that it has the
words 'Confirmed at last General Quarter Sessions'.
This seems to mean that his remand in custody was
confirmed but not that he was actually tried. Since
we don't have him in any later Calendars, it
looks as though he was eventually released.
This started out as a blog for Dolmans from North Wilts. It has now expanded beyond this. So if you are a Dolman and have info that might be useful to other Dolmans involved in Family History, let me know. If you feel able, please sign the guestbook (link on left). Please email me at: dolmanfamilyhistory@yopmail.com if you want to post to this blog. I can then set you up as a user. Anyone can add a comment. (They are moderated)
