Dear Andy
I confirm that we have looked further into these entries, which I recall
were as follows:
CALNE - Parish Baptisms
1802 Sep 12 - William, son of William and Elizabeth DOLMAN, born 3
September.
1803 Dec 28 - William, son of Ann BUTTON, born 4 September, reputed father
is Walter DOLMAN.
We previously searched for infant burials of the above two, without finding
anything in Calne, so I would assume that both may have survived. I
therefore carried out Marriage searches for them, as follows:
1) Marriage search
Looking for William DOLMAN, post-1815, I found the following entries in our
Wiltshire Index:
DATE: 17 FEB 1818 PLACE: Maiden Bradley
GROOM: DOLMAN William of this parish
BRIDE: NORRIS Betty
DATE: 03 APR 1823 PLACE: Cherhill by Banns
GROOM: DOLMAN William of this parish
BRIDE: POTTOW Ann of this parish
DATE: 15 SEP 1834 PLACE: Maiden Bradley
GROOM: DOLMAN William Bach of this parish
BRIDE: WHITE Eliza Spin of this parish
DATE: 16 MAY 1836 PLACE: Maiden Bradley
GROOM: DOLMAN als MILES William Bach of this parish
BRIDE: WALTER Mary Ann Spin of this parish
Our Wiltshire Marriage Index only goes up to 1837, but that should cover all
of the period we would expect for this marriage.
As you can see, only the 1823 entry appears to be the only one that is
relevant, and that's your William anyway.
2) Marriage search
Looking for William BUTTON, post-1815, I noted these entries for BATTON or
BUTTON:
DATE: 01 DEC 1819 PLACE: Homington by Banns
GROOM: BUTTON William of this parish
BRIDE: PRINCE Anne of this parish
Consent of parents.
DATE: 28 JAN 1827 PLACE: Calne
GROOM: BUTTON William of this parish
BRIDE: LAWRENCE Ann of this parish
DATE: 21 APR 1828 PLACE: Marlborough St Peter by Licence
GROOM: BATTEN William Wid Hursborne, Hants.
BRIDE: HOLDWAY Hannah Spin of this parish
DATE: 30 MAY 1831 PLACE: Bradford on Avon
GROOM: BATTEN William Tiverton
BRIDE: HANNY Harriett
DATE: 25 DEC 1832 PLACE: Downton by Banns
GROOM: BATTEN William of this parish
BRIDE: RICHMAN Rebecca of this parish
DATE: 22 OCT 1835 PLACE: Pitton & Farley
GROOM: BATTEN William of this parish
BRIDE: WHITE Eleanor of this parish
Of these, I am sure that the entry in 1827 in Calne, is the William who was
baptised in 1803.
This would make him aged 24 when he was married - just about right, but this
isn't your William.
3) Conclusion
Given the above findings, I am fairly confident that your William is the one
found in Calne 1827, born to William & Elizabeth 1802, even though he later
said that he was born in Cherhill. If his family moved to Cherhill sometime
after the birth, maybe he believed that this was where he was born.
