John Dolman 1766 Cherhill

Dear Andy

I confirm that we have now looked into this query for you.
Looking back on our previous correspondence, the entries that you have
provided, do not appear to have been verified by us, so I will trust that
these are all from a confirmed source.

1) Review

I note that you have this baptism entry:

CHERHILL - Parish Baptism
1766 Jun 09 - John, son of John & Mary DOLMAN

And this marriage entry:

BREMHILL - Parish Marriage
1791 Mar 06 - John DOMAN, to Ann SIMKINS, both of the parish.

Plus this death entry:

Civil Death record, at Stanley, Chippenham
1843 Oct 19 - John DOLMAN, aged 80.

I see that John died before the 1851 census, but was alive in 1841, aged 70
(although ages here are rounded to the nearest 5).
I checked our 1851 census index, and I see that Ann was still alive, aged
80, and living with dau & son-in-law William & Elizabeth CLEVERLY in
Chippenham.

On your tree, you appear to have children for this couple, as follows:
George 1791
Elizabeth 1793
William 1796
Thomas 1800
Jane 1802
James 1805
although no exact dates, or places are given.

2) Marriage search

I searched our Wiltshire Marriage Index, to see if there were any viable
alternative marriages for John DOLMAN.
I found these entries between 1780 and 1815:

DATE: 22 DEC 1787 PLACE: Maiden Bradley by Banns
GROOM: DOLMAN John of this parish
BRIDE: OVER Jane of this parish

DATE: 06 MAR 1791 PLACE: Bremhill
GROOM: DOMAN John of this parish
BRIDE: SIMKINS Ann of this parish

DATE: 27 MAY 1792 PLACE: Lacock
GROOM: DOLMAN John Compton Bassett
BRIDE: NASH Sarah Pewsham

DATE: 26 JAN 1809 PLACE: Westbury
GROOM: DOLEMAN John
BRIDE: HOBBS Ann

DATE: 20 APR 1812 PLACE: Cherhill
GROOM: DOLMAN John
BRIDE: HAWKINS Mary

So, there are a few that could be considered equally alongside the Bremhill
entry, although there is only one marriage to Ann, at the right time to be
yours.
I don't know where your stated children were found, so I can't comment on
this, but it does appear to be a good match.

If you wanted us to search earlier Bremhill records for John DOLMAN, we
could check to see if any trace was found of him earlier than 1766 in this
parish. Otherwise, I think that this is probably correct.

3) Varied Index

I did check our Varied Index, to see if there were any records of the DOLMAN
name in Bremhill, but the only entry I found was this one:

DATE: 18 MAR 1861
SURNAME: DOLMAN FORENAME: ELIZABETH
CLASS: BASTARDY ORDERS REF: WRO/B10/100/2
SOURCE: Bastardy Transcription volume 3. Printed by Wilts Family History
Society.
NOTES: Elizabeth DOLMAN spinster of Stanly in Bremhill, by George DOLMAN.
Male child born on 25 Dec. Others mentioned: Sarah PEARCE. More details in
book.

I therefore suspect that the DOLMAN's did not come from this parish.

I did note that I had quite a few other DOLMAN Varied Index entries which
pertained to Cherhill, which I don't think I have provided you with
previously. Let me know if you are interested in these.

4) Conclusion

This does all appear to be satisfactory, and I hope that this was what you
were wanting me to prove.
If this is ok, I will continue with a similar exercise for James DOLMAN
(bapt 1805).
