Dolman George & Eliza Bristow, Marriage @ 1847

Dear Andy

I have now been able to look through this for you, and have the following
comments:

1) Marriage search

I see that you said that George and Elizabeth's first child was an Alfred (1848).
However, I note from the 1851 census, that there was an Ellen, aged 5 in 1851.
This means that they were married prior to 1846 (assuming that they got married).

We therefore revisited the marriage search in the GRO indexes, but still couldn't find a match.

2) 1841 census

Ages of adults in the 1841 census were rounded to the nearest 5 years.
Children's ages were generally recorded accurately. This entry does appear to be the George DOLEMAN that you are looking for. We checked for the marriage of James and Ann, and noted that this was as follows:

DATE: 27 NOV 1826 PLACE: Chippenham by Banns
GROOM: DOMAN James Bach of this parish
BRIDE: ELMS Anne Spin of this parish

3) Baptism search

From the places given for the birth-place of George, I suggest that Bremhill and Chippenham parishes are searched for an entry for him, c.1827. I will be going to the new Wiltshire Archives in a couple of days time, so if you would like me to look for this, let me know.

4) Marriage search

That still leaves us wanting to find the marriage of George and Eliza.

I suggest that the Chippenham Registrar could be asked to look for this, in their records.
Given that we now know the date of the first child, this means that George was aged only about 19 when she was born. That shouldn't leave much of a time-window for this to happen.
