JAMES DOLMAN AND MARY EALY

Does anyone know who the father of James Dolman (1792, Cherhill Wiltshire) was? He married Mary Ealy (15th May 1817). There were two James Dolmans born in Cherhill in the same year.

I see you have added James who married Mary Ealy to your tree as the son of James Dolman and Elizabeth Wiltshire. What made you decide it was this James and not the son of William b 1764 and Elizabeth Bullock? I have been struggling to figure out myself which parents he belonged to.

Hi Cheryl,
I've just added James and Mary to James and Elizabeth Wiltshire at the moment until I can sort out which James is which. I suspect he should be attached to William and Elizabeth. However, this is a hunch based on his trade as a thatcher. William's son William (my direct ancestor) was also a thatcher. It would be interesting to find out from the parish records whether it mentions James' father in the marriage entry and whether there are any other records in the manorial courts about the relationships.

Andy,

The entry for James and Mary's marriage on 15 May 1817 at Cherhill gives no indication of the fathers. The witnesses were Jacob Ealy and Esther Hilliar. All four signed with their mark. By banns.

The two baptisms were 17 May 1792 to William and Elizabeth and 25 Dec 1792 to James and Elizabeth. So at least you know the mother was Elizabeth, even if you don't know her maiden name!

There are two burials at Cherhill which may be relevant: James aged 24 on 28 Dec 1818 living Cherhill and James aged 66 on 19 June 1856 living Labour-in-Vain Hill, which is still named the same today. I smile every time I drive up it! If only the first entry said "son of...." or "husband of..."!

Jane Braney
