Hi Andy. I have been a bit quiet lately but here are some more -Thomas Dolman gunmaker is probably one of our Sussex Dolman/Dollmans line and may be related to Walter as well-only link is time frame and St Dunstans and name Walter which is also common to Sussex. William is the father of Frederick William and there are references to a FWD, solicitor and I don’t think this is one is our Sussex family.

I wish I could connect up the early Sussex/Kent Dolmans to our family. I think they may have started off as officials at the Cinque port of Breznet - Romney- New Romney-Pevensey etc in mid 14 century but originally were connected to the Shirynton family- Walter was the Chancellor of Lancaster and was at Agincourt before that with Humphrey Duke of Gloucester. Waulter Dolman was executor for his brother Robert Sh as well. He refers to the Shiryngtons as cousins and his aunt. Which Dolman family do you think came first? It is too obvious to say Pocklingtons D's as they are the only ones to have had early records taken.

Eliza Day alias Dee was indicted for feloniously stealing on 6th September many items from the property of William Dollman in his dwelling House 30 Foley Place Cavendish Square. William Dollman mentions that the prisoner Day lived with me as a servant from March and also helped with his wife’s confinement. His wife Maria was also called and gave her statement.

THE IGI is no help as no children to Walter and Elizabeth in time frame. Only marriage in time frame is Walter to Elizabeth Greene 25 April 1667 Pen Staffordshire but as this is only 7 years later it is unlikely he would know his daughter Ann would be better off etc.

MARINA'S LIFE WITH A CITY LEGEND

21 November 2006 - Harry Dolman became chairman of Bristol City F.C. in 1949, a post he would hold for over 30 years. An engineer who had bought out the firm he worked for, he designed the first set of floodlights installed at Ashton Gate in the early 1950s. In 1970 The Dolman Stand is built at a cost of £235,000 and is named after chairman Harry Dolman.

When Harry Dolman, a giant of Bristol's industrial and sporting life, married Marina in 1961, he was 63 and she was just 24. Quita Morgan talks to Marina about life with the Bristol City chairman. Marina Dolman met her first paparazzo on her wedding day, when he jumped onto the running board of the Rolls-Royce.That lone celebrity-hunter was unlucky - he had to leap from the moving limo with neither picture nor quote.

But for Marina it was a first glimpse of her future as the glamorous young wife of Bristol City chairman Harry Dolman. She was 24 and pretty, he was 63 and wealthy. Soon their secret was out - and about to be splashed across the front pages. After marrying quietly at Quakers Friars early one April morning in 1961, the couple held a reception for close family and friends at the Grand Hotel in Broad Street. 'Someone must have tipped off the newspapers, because we had to dodge reporters as we left the hotel,' Marina recalls, flashing the same smile that must have captivated Harry some 45 years ago.

'The Rolls was taken round to the back of the hotel to avoid the press, but one of them still managed to spot us. It was my introduction to what life as Harry's wife would be like.' Throughout 16 years of marriage and nearly 30 of widowhood, Marina has been a fervent soccer fan.

As well as being president of Bristol City FC, she has also been an active president of the supporters' club since her husband's death in 1977. At 70, she no longer runs the Chew Magna house which she and Harry chose as newlyweds, but has downsized to a home in South Gloucestershire.

But there's no danger that she will ever give up going to football.

She has been a regular fixture in the directors' box at Ashton Gate since her honeymoon, and she's proud to have turned into its longest resident. A Dame of the Order of St John and a former trustee of Bristol Cathedral, Marina was born in Hong Kong in 1936.

'My father was in the army and we sailed from China to India when I was six months old,' she recalls. 'We moved to Northern Ireland in 1939 and then to Wales, after war was declared. My mother and I could no longer travel with my father because of the war, so at first we stayed at my grandparents' house in Pembroke Dock, and then my mother rented a house in Tenby.

'While we were staying with my grandparents, I remember seeing a German plane overhead, and then the oil tanks on Barrack Hill go up in flames when the bombs dropped. 'My mother told me it was an air raid, and she picked me up in her arms, wrapped me in a blanket, and carried me down to the cellar.

'That was why we moved to Tenby, but we often visited my grandparents. One Sunday, in 1941, my grandmother tried to persuade us to stay the night.

'I remember mummy hesitating. But then she said no, we had to get the bus back to Tenby because I must not miss school the next day.

'That night my grandparents' house was bombed and razed to the ground. Fortunately, the family were all in the cellar and survived, though one of my aunts was badly injured.

'In 1942, we rented half a house in Blackpool to be near my father. But when he was posted back to India in 1944, mother and I went back to Wales.

'When my father was demobbed, he joined the civil service.

'We moved to Bristol in 1947. I hated the city at first because it was such a contrast to the freedom and beauty of Pembrokeshire. Bristol in those early post-war days seemed a dull, dark, grey bomb site.

'One day my father took me to the Central Library to help me with an essay I had to write, and afterwards we went next door to Bristol Cathedral.

'As we walked in, the sun was shining through the windows, and that was the first time I felt happy and relaxed in Bristol.

'I was sent to Merrywood Grammar School in Knowle, which I hated at first but enjoyed more after a while. We had a terrific headmistress and a very sound all-round education.

'After leaving I worked in an office for six months before going to the Phyllis Christie private secretarial college in Cheltenham.

'After that I worked in Bath, London and Hanover, where I lived for 18 months until my mother became unwell and asked me to come home.

Then she spotted Harry Dolman's employment advert in the newspaper; the job required not only secretarial skills but also knowledge of French and German.

'I wasn't at all keen,' recalls Marina, 'I had never heard of Harry Dolman or his engineering company, Brecknell, Dolman and Rogers Ltd, on Pennywell Road.

'Anyway, I wanted to be an air stewardess, not a secretary, but I replied to the advert for my mother's sake.

'Harry interviewed me and asked lots of questions before saying: 'I'd better test your shorthand, I suppose.'

I shall never forget that test. It was a really horrible piece of technical jargon and engineering terminology, but fortunately I was quite good at shorthand, and was able to read it back to him.

'That was November, 1959, when I was 23, and I married Harry 15 months later. For more than a year, it was strictly business, and then one day in March, 1961, while we were opening the post together, we laughed about something in one of the letters, and out of the blue Harry said: 'If I asked you, would you marry me?' (he was recently widowed).

'I thought he was joking, but he asked me to think about it. He was 39 years older than I was, so there was a lot to think about and talk about.'

'My parents were not very happy about it, and said I was wasting my life.

'It might sound a clich??, but Harry was my soulmate and once we had decided, there was no point in waiting.

'We married by special licence. No one knew apart from our families and close friends, but it caused uproar as soon as word got out because of the age difference.

'I probably married an older man because I spent my early childhood, before my younger sister came along, living with much older people.

'My mother was one of eight, and I was very spoiled as the baby of the family, with uncles and aunts who used to take me out; it meant I grew up finding people of my own age rather immature.

'I think the age gap between Harry and me seemed more like 20 years rather than 40, because in those days I was older than my years and he was younger than his.

'I enjoyed my life with Harry, and we had a great time. Never for one solitary moment did I regret my decision, and I know he didn't.'

Plaque and commemorative tribute to Harry Dolman

Ashton Gate Ltd has launched its own official website, as well as announcing the Bristol Evening Post as the new Dolman Exhibition Hall sponsor.

A specially-arranged event took place at the stadium this afternoon, where businesses and guests were invited to view the new-look facilities.

Club president Marina Dolman unveiled a special commemorative plaque, alongside a tribute to the hard work done by her late husband Harry during his 25-year spell as chairman of the club.

Colin Sexstone then announced the launch of ashtongatestadium.co.uk and the new partnership with the Evening Post.

The group chief executive said: "Bristol has bemoaned the lack of good conference facilities in the past, so now we want to show people we have facilities to be proud of.

"What the new Evening Post Dolman Exhibition Hall offers is an area half-an-acre in size, capable of hosting major exhibitions, conferences and dinners."

Bristol United Press managing director Steve Anderson-Dixon said: "For the Evening Post to have brand awareness with Ashton Gate is a very good thing, because we both share the same spirit of all things local.

The Evening Post Dolman Exhibition Hall plaque marks today's official opening and sits alongside a special tribute to Harry Dolman.

Harry was chairman of Bristol City FC between 1949 and 1974 and was fundamental in the design and build of the Dolman Stand.

He also played a key role in bringing legendary striker John Atyeo to the club. Harry sadly passed away in 1977, a year after watching his beloved club secure promotion to the top flight in English football.

Marina Dolman says "Gate facilities are marvellous"

After unveiling the commemorative plaque, club president Marina Dolman said: "I do hope everyone who uses the new facilities at Ashton Gate enjoys them because they really are marvellous - and I can vouch for that."

Snippet from "Pioneering in the Bellinger Valley" ( NSW Australia) - Produced from the Bellinger Valley Historical Society

"In 1906 an event occurred at the Hospital which must have split the community in two. Margaret Jane Slater had been appointed Matron in 1904 and entered on her duties in January 1905. The Hospital was managed by a Committee, the President was Edward James Robert Walker Raymond and the Hon Sec. Edward William Chidley, a Bellinger, solicitor. The local doctor was Edward William Fox Dolman who had practiced in Bellinger only since the previous November and on the resignation of Dr Humphrey was appointed as hospital doctor until March 1906 These were the principal actors in the drama which was enacted on February 6, 1906.

( I believe Dr Dolman graduated 1901 in U.K.- PF)

In 1905 things began to go wrong. Although in the middle of the year the President expressed satisfaction with the Matron and said he would recommend a bonus of 5 pound at Christmas , he began to find fault with her financial management, particularly with the cost of afternoon teas at which she entertained her friends. There was also a complaint that she had left a patient in pain and gone down the street, but some friction occurred between her and some of the members of the Committee. On January 17, 1905 the Annual Meeting of subscribers elected as Committeemen etc………… Dr Dolman applied for re-election as Medical Officer in March but was not accepted and early in the year it was decided to terminate the Matron's appointment and replace her with Nurse Tully. She refused to leave, saying that her appointment was till March. However on 13 January the President and two other Committeemen visited the Hospital with Nurse Tully. Gave her a chair and said they installed her as Matron. Matron Slater still refused to leave and they went away. The position was complicated by the fact that there were three patients in the Hospital at the time, including a Mr. Anderson, who was seriously ill and whose temperature went up dangerously when he heard of the trouble. He said that he would refuse to stay in the hospital if Matron Slater left. This was the position on Feb 6, when the President and about 6 members of the Committee came and asked her to leave and offered certain inducement including permission to remain and nurse, but under Matron Tully. She refused and they told her that they might have to use force to remove her. The stage was now set for a confrontation that afternoon. She summoned her friends, who were Dr and Mrs. Dolman and Surveyor Evans and his wife. Soon the President appeared with thirteen of the Committee and a policeman. He again appealed to Matron Slater to leave but she refused. George Wills then seized her right arm and with the help of the President she was forcibly ejected from the building and out through the gate of the Hospital grounds.

Matron Tully took over the Hospital but Mr. Anderson left against Dr Dolman's advice. The doctor took him to his ( the doctors home) where he died a little later".

The case went to court and Matron Slater was awarded compensation of 150 pounds,-particularly as she was able to prove bruises on her arms etc..

As you can tell I had some time to kill!! Does anyone know anything about the naming of these places or roads. The Dolman Stand (Bristol) and Pocklington School are well known, how about the more obscure road names?

ISACK DOLMAN 1792 CHERHILL POORE BOOK

This entry is from the Cherhill Poore Book for November 8th 1792. Again it is a transcript from The Manor and Village of Cherhill. I suspect that Betty Holman is actually James Dolman's wife Betty Dolman as I can find no other mention of Holman in Cherhill. There were two Isaacs in Cherhill at this time, one born in 1767, one in 1763. The 1767 Isaac was married to Mary Rawlings.
